Background

Weak financial awareness leads most young people to live paycheck to paycheck.

Today, an increasing number of young people find themselves in the lifestyle of living paycheck to paycheck. This is mainly due to the rise of "overdraft consumption" and the weak financial awareness among the youth. Their monthly expenses and income are severely imbalanced, often leading to financial difficulties.

Goal

Getting into the habit of recording daily income and cost is the first step in improving financial awareness.

iMoney is an intelligent expense tracking app that helps users collect and visualize personalized data about their income and expenses, as well as avoid unnecessary expenses in order to meet their savings goals.

Research

Discovery 01

Weak financial management awareness

According to the survey, 72% of people do not have the habit of tracking their expenses. Even among those who do track their expenses or utilize expense-tracking apps, a significant 76% of them struggle to maintain a consistent record-keeping habit. They fail to systematically and regularly record their expenses.

Discovery 02

Manually recording every expense is time-consuming and difficult to maintain.

The interviews revealed that the majority of the interviewees aim to cultivate the habit of tracking their expenses since they recognize that they have financial issues. However, they feel that recording their expenses every day is a time-consuming task and difficult to maintain.

Discovery 03

Frequent impulsive spending can be detrimental to one's financial health and stability.

During the interviews, it was observed that many young people have a tendency to engage in impulsive spending, without much consideration, buying things that hold little to no value. As the end of the month approaches, they often regret their decisions.

User Testing

Test Feedback

  1. Homepage

  • Users wish to have a clear and comprehensive view of their latest financial status and transaction information on the homepage.

The current homepage display is not sufficiently informative and lacks depth.

  1. Budget Set Flow

  • During the budgeting process, users hesitate and feel uncertain about creating a reasonable budget due to a lack of reference data.

  • After setting their savings goals and budget, users want to see a confirmation interface that visually displays their set content.

The Revision

  • Based on feedback from user testing, I have added a financial overview module to the homepage. This module provides users with personalized financial indicators and data, such as net worth, income, and expenses, based on their linked bank account transactions.

This will help users gain a better understanding of their current financial health status.

  • Furthermore, I have seamlessly integrated the saving goals and budgets set by users with their current income and expenses, and visualized the progress data through charts.

This will enable users to gain a more intuitive understanding of their goal progress and make informed adjustments to their spending habits as needed.

Further understanding revealed that users hesitate in setting budgets due to a lack of clear understanding of their own spending habits.

Based on this discovery, I provided users with a detailed itemized table of their monthly expenses and prioritized displaying the categories they most frequently spend on, providing them with average monthly spending as reference data. Additionally, I also showed them specific spending records in the past within these categories, allowing them to review and distinguish between impulse purchases and necessary expenses.

This will assist users in establishing more sensible and customized budgets.

Based on feedback from users, I have added a feature that automatically redirects to the statistics and bills page after setting savings goals, budget, and voice recording transactions. These pages display the completed savings goals and budget information, as well as the latest transaction details.

For the design of the statistics data page, I have used charts and process bars to visualize the data, helping users to easily view their set content, make adjustments, and gain a better understanding of their current financial situation.

Such an information confirmation interface provides users with final confirmation and choices, prevents accidental operations, and enhances user engagement and sense of control.

Reflection

This is the first project I have completed after being exposed to UX design. This project has allowed me to gain a deep understanding of user experience design, from initial research to mid-term user testing and final interface design, always putting user feedback and perception at the center. It has made me realize the importance of user-centric product design and optimization.

In terms of UI design, I have also made significant progress. At the beginning, I didn't have a clear concept of good design, but through referencing and learning from many mature products, I iterated through 4 versions of UI design within a month. I gradually realized the importance of card-based design and component creation, striving to present users with a simple and comfortable visual interface.
